Enabling Wake-on-LAN on Linux from Mac

There are many different notes on how to wake up remote machines from other machines over the network. This ‘Wake-on-LAN’ service sends a magic packet to the Ethernet adapter of the switched off machine and boots it up.

However some instructions are complicated and convoluted. These notes record the simplest way I found to set this up for my setup which is a Linux server I want to be able to wake remotely from Mac OSX machines.
